Fedora Barbieri was born in Trieste in 1920 and made her La Scala debut in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Victor de Sabata in 1942; following a short sabbatical from singing in the mid-1940s, she first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1950 as Eboli in Don Carlos, the beginning of a long association with the house which saw her notch up almost 100 performances over the course of her career.
