The Belgian period-instrument orchestra Anima Eterna Brugge was founded by Jos van Immerseel in 1987 in order to ‘explore the original soundscapes in which composers have lived, worked and created each piece’: unlike many groups which focus on historically-informed performance, they do not specialise in baroque and classical repertoire, but perform a wide range of music from Monteverdi to Ravel.
Their discography runs to over sixty recordings, and includes a complete cycle of the Beethoven symphonies, a ‘viscerally exciting’ (The Guardian recording of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and an album of Ravel which was shortlisted for a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2007.
